GAPI ANNUAL MEETING
April 19th 2008

The GAPI annual meeting was very successful this year. It was held at the CNN Omni Hotel in downtown Atlanta. The success was, however, not without difficulties. The meeting had been scheduled for April 19th and all reservations were made. Just a month before the meeting a powerful tornado hit Atlanta downtown and caused a lot of damage to the buildings. Several roads were closed. South tower of the CNN Omni Hotel was closed due to damage. Fortunately for GAPI the North tower was intact and the meeting venue or date did not have to be changed. More then 180 members and guests attended the meeting this year. The following events took place:

  1. We had a board meeting at 2.30 pm. Several matters were discussed including nomination of the executive committee members. Dr Santanu Das was nominated to be the President elect. Dr Sreeni Gangasani was nominated to be the Secretary. Dr Dilip Patel was nominated to be the Treasurer. These nominations would be then presented at the main meeting for election along with any other nominations from the floor.
  2. The educational meeting was started at 4.30pm and we had good attendance at this meeting. There were 4 speakers at the meeting as follows:
    A) Osteoporosis update. Dr Natarajan
    B) Sudden Cardiac Death. Dr G Gandhi.
    C) Update on GERD. Dr Jonnalagadda.
    D) Update on Breast Cancer. Dr Padma Nadella.
  3. The cocktail hour was from 6.30 to 7.30pm. This was kept in a hall with display
Booths from several sponsors. There were at least 15 companies, both pharmaceutical companies as well as other businesses. The booths were well attended by members and guests. The camaraderie and networking was great.
  4. The main business meeting was from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. The speaker for the evening was Dr Raj Reddy, Director of Liver Transplantation at U Penn. He gave a concise talk on Hepatitis C. Roche Pharmaceutical Company sponsored this event. The chief guests gave their speeches after the main speech. The first talk was by Georgia Senate majority leader Tommy Williams. He gave an excellent talk about the current state of healthcare. Then the MAG President Dr Jack Chapman Jr., who gave a talk about health affairs in Georgia including the recent changes in Georgia CON laws.
  5. This was followed by Change of GAPI leadership. Dr Sudhaker Jonnalagadda gave his speech followed by the new incoming President, Dr P.H. Patel. Voting was then brought before the meeting and new committee was voted in. Dr Santanu Das will be the president elect. Dr Sreeni Gangasani was elected as secretary and Dr Dilip patel was elected as treasurer.

GAPI is very proud to continue the tradition of giving the scholarships to several deserving students. Dr P B Rao presented the scholarships.
